Facelift Surgery: What You Need to Know

What is a Facelift?

A facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that helps to tighten and lift the underlying muscles and skin on your face and neck. It can restore volume to the cheeks and improve sagging skin, giving you a more youthful and refreshed appearance. A facelift can help address issues like drooping jowls, sagging cheeks, and deep wrinkles around the mouth and chin.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Facelift?

You may be a good candidate for a facelift if:

  • You want to look more youthful and refreshed but aren’t interested in non-surgical treatments.
  • You are noticing sagging skin, deep lines, or jowls around your face and neck.
  • You have lost skin elasticity due to aging but have healthy skin and muscle tone.
  • You are in overall good health and have realistic expectations for the outcome of the surgery.

How is the Surgery Done?

A facelift is typically done under general anesthesia, meaning you’ll be asleep during the surgery. We use state-of-the-art deep plane technique by tightenting the muscle called the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) that loosens over time thereby contributing to facial aging and trim excess skin around the ears. We will make carefully planned incisions, usually along the hairline, around the ears, and sometimes under the chin, to remove excess skin, tighten underlying tissues, and lift the skin and underlying mucles/fat pads back into place. The surgery can take several hours, depending on the extent of the procedure.

For some patients, a facelift may be combined with other procedures, like eyelid surgery, brow lifts, or neck lifts, to achieve the most natural and complete results.

What to Expect After Surgery (Healing & Recovery)

Healing Time: After a facelift, you will need about 1 to 2 weeks to recover. During the first few days, you may experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort, especially around the face, neck, and jawline.

Expectations:

  • Swelling and bruising are normal and will begin to improve after a few days.
  • The majority of swelling will go down within the first 2 weeks, but some minor swelling can last for several weeks.
  • You may have bandages or drains to help reduce swelling and promote healing. These will be removed during follow-up appointments.
  • Your surgeon will provide instructions on how to care for your incisions, manage discomfort, and when to return for follow-up visits.

Pain Management: Some discomfort is normal after surgery, but pain is typically manageable with prescribed pain relievers or over-the-counter medications. Cold compresses can help reduce swelling.

What to Avoid:

  • Avoid strenuous activities, such as heavy lifting or exercise, for about 4 to 6 weeks after surgery.
  • Don’t expose your face to direct sunlight for the first few months, and wear sunscreen to protect your skin.
  • Avoid smoking, as it can slow down the healing process and increase the risk of complications.

What Results Can You Expect?

Once the swelling and bruising have subsided, you should notice a smoother, more youthful appearance with lifted cheeks, a tighter neck, and fewer wrinkles. Results can last for many years, though the natural aging process will continue. A facelift doesn’t stop aging, but it can help you look several years younger and feel more confident.

Common Questions:

  • Will I have visible scars? Your surgeon will place the incisions in natural creases, such as around the ears and under the chin, to minimize the visibility of scars. Once healed, the scars are usually well-hidden, even with short hair.
  • How long will the results last? While a facelift can take years off your appearance, the effects will gradually fade over time as the aging process continues. It’s best to think of the procedure as a “reset,” where the lift takes your back 8-10 years. You will continue to age after that naturally. Further procedures aimed at rejuvenating the face after your facelift depends on your goals and how much aging has occurred.
  • Is a facelift safe? Yes, a facelift is a safe procedure when performed by a skilled and experienced surgeon. Like any surgery, there are risks, but complications are rare. Your surgeons will go through the risks in detail at consultation.
  • Can I return to work right after surgery? You may need to take about 1 to 2 weeks off work to allow for healing. Most of the swelling and bruising should be gone by the 3 week point, but some minor changes may still be visible. You are generally considered photo ready at the 1 month mark.
